Do vậy ông ta tách

an bình của thế giới.
lực và than ôi!

Và do vậy Chúa nguyền rủa Cain.

Dominic than phiền
Do đô thị hóa họ bị tước đi niềm vui cuộc sống.
nhau và nơi cuộc sống bạo tàn mờ mịt mà nhân loại đang trải qua hiện nay, do
hoa vẫy chào anh - Chúc may mắn.

Eco criticism
By Ramesh Chandra Mukhopadhyaya
(From Calcutta, India)
Texts that interpret texts are literary
criticisms. A work of literature of remote past when there was no iota of
modern science could be read in the the light of the time period when it was
written if the required data to that end is available. But at the same time we
cannot but read them in the light of our time. The literature of the cart age
must be judged in the light of nuclear as well. With the advent of
industrialisation the conflict between labour and capital came to the fore and
Marxist criticism showed up. Presently women felt that there is gender
discrimination. Hence feminist criticism raised its head.
But above all, human activities have
ruined Nature so much so that in near future the earth will no longer remain
habitable for man. And we must remember that the earth is the only spaceship for
us men. We cannot alight from it to board on another. But like the person who
is about to cut the very branch of the tree on which he is seated we are about
to burn the very house in which we live. As Einstein warns us if there is
another nuclear war man shall have to fight with sticks again. If the explosion
of the hydrogen bomb ever touches the atmosphere beyond the earth our much
loved earth, our home, will be turned into a piece of charcoal wandering in the
space. This is apocalypse, something reminiscent of the complete destruction of
the world in the biblical book of Revelation.

(K. V. Dominic)
This dystopia is not witnessed in a night
mare. It is day mare experienced by widely open eyes. And we wonder is this the
home where we live? We live and half live in this strange world The very
place where we live, our home, has been estranged from us. Water one of the
elements that constitute our earth has been polluted. Water stands for
passivity adaptability fertility purity and cleansing. Water stands for our
emotions. Destruction of man is close at hand when our emotions are
defiled our minds are defied. And see how we treat the source of water
and rivers. Dominic exclaims-- Siachen glacier feeding several rivers has been
irrationally axed and dug( Siachen Tragedy).
In this context awareness of how we treat our
Earth or Nature our home is our prime concern. And there is ecocriticism as
well as eco poetry. It goes without saying that ecocriticism and
ecopoetry cannot but dwell on the trope called apocalypse.
Here we will not dwell on the theories of eco
criticism and burden our heads. Suffice it to say that eco criticism does
not excelsior in the ether of aesthetics. Instead it prefers to drop into its
nest the earth. It probes into the relationship of man with his non
human environment. Human activities take place in the network of linkages
processes and systems that are cultural as well as biotic and related to the surroundings.
Well that means eco criticism takes into account mans relationship with the
nonliving Nature. We have already touched upon how water is being polluted and
how it affects man is anybody’s guess.
The relationship between man and wild birds
do also fall within the compass of our discussion. A little child Ananthu is
scared when a kite pecks him. Later children in a band stone the bird. It is
injured. The band of children disperse immediately. Ananthu who did not stone
the bird is mortally injured by the carnivore. There could be carnivorous birds
and animals. But they kill their preys for food. But they do not kill for
luxury or for commercial purposes unlike man. Irks care the cropful bird?
Doubts fret the maw crammed beast? But man is never satisfied despite the fact
that his belly is full.(Ananthu and the Wretched Kite by Dominic).
Dominic is a master of creating situations. A
tamed elephant is totured in many ways... He is made to dance... He is an
exhibit for temple festival. The heavy sounds of firework finally shatters his
tolerance. He charges his mahout in a huff. (Elephant Mania by Dominic.)
Does the elephant stand for the earth and Nature? Is the tolerance of
Nature strained? Newtonion theory posited that the mysteries of Nature could be
unravelled. But right now chaos theory has replaced the 18th century world view. Chaos theory sets
forth that Nature is unknown and unknowable. Science can guess which areas are
flood prone and which areas are earthquake prone. But it cannot say when and
where a flood or an earthquake will take place. To save ourselves we had better
migrate from earthquake prone area or flood prone area. But are we
civilised enough for that? If people from a flood prone area migrate to a
place where there is no probability of flood will the denizens of the latter
welcome their guests?
We propose here to read a few poems of
yesterday and today to explore man’s relationship with the nonhuman world on
different levels.
If we go back to Anglo Saxon literature we
find the winds howling at all hours. There is a melancholy note about the
description of Nature. Bewoulf is the symbol of victory over the forces of
Nature such as land water and fire. Despite that we do not have the fortifying
energy that is expected in a narrative where man overcomes his adversary Nature.
Because Wyrd changes everything under the skies.
And now let us recall Gilgamesh the great
epic from Mesopotamia. There the battle is between man and Nature. While
Gilgamesh is civilised and kingly Enkidu is not. Enkidu goes naked and wears
furs. He drinks water from the river and yet he is very strong. He is brought
up in the forest and he lives with animals. There is a battle between Enkidu
and Gilgamesh. None wins. They become bosom friends. They two together set out
for adventure Humbaba guards the cedar forest. They kill Humbaba. Then there are
the Scorpion beings who guard the gate leading to the two mountains whereby one
could reach the rising Sun. There is the wine maker to the gods who
protects herself and her vineyard from man- Gilgamesh. Do not these instances
tell us that Nature always resists human encroachment into her realms?
But Newton looked upon the world as a vast
machine out of use, run by the forces of push and pull, attraction and
repulsion With him the vast Nature was a boundless heap of scraps. Man was at
liberty to pick up those scraps at his will , use them and throw them into the
Nature itself ----a bottomless bin. The consequences have been dire.
Descartes posited that while body has
extension mind is characterised by thought. Thus he separated mind from body
and man from Nature. The consequences have been dire.
In this context the present author cannot but
recall a few lines from an Indian English poet of our time K V Dominic
We do use our reasoning power
Not to find harmony
We take thrills in discordant notes
Love to split atoms
And destroy others
And let us hark back to the first Indian
poems called the Rigvedas. The first hymn of the Rig vedas reads
I worship Fire
Fire leads the world to the act of sacrifice
Fire is effulgent
Fire is the convenor who invokes the gods
Fire is full of price less gems and untold treasure
Our ancestors used to worship Fire.
And so do we the moderns
May he bring the gods at this place of sacrifice
The worshipper gains wealth with the aid of Fire
That wealth multiplies and earns fame
With that wealth we can engage numerous warriors
Oh Fire ! No one can destroy the act of
sacrifice
Which is surrounded and guarded by you.
And that act of sacrifice reaches the gods
There is no denial of this fact
Fire is the convoker who invokes the gods
Fire is successful in every enterprise
Fire is truthful and the true poet
Fire is famed to have performed countless and varied
achievements
He is a god
May he come here in company with other gods
Oh Fire the blessings that you bestow upon the worshipper
Who pours butter into the flames are blessings upon you
in reality.
Oh Fire! We worship you day after day. day and night from
the core of our hearts
And we are coming closer to you
Oh Fire !You are aburning bright and you enhance
the spirit of self sacrifice
Just as the father is easily accessible to the son
So you be with us
You live with us for the wellbeing of the world
The poet who dates back to at least 1500 BC,
unlike Prometheus does, not steal fire for the benefit of man. He looks upon
fire as the source of infinite strength and wealth and poetry. Because it is by
way of sacrificing the self in the fire that surrounds and permeates the
existence, the gods can be reached. The fire is at the core of the
multiverse. The vast existence is manifest through its ceaseless
fulmination. Every day, by day and night the poet inculcates in him the
spirit of fire and becomes nearer to fire.Fire breeds in us the warriors that
help us to vanquish our desires that are self centred.
The Vedas are loaded with similar hymns
addressed to the Wind Water Skies and so on. There are more than one
thousand hymns in the Rigveda itself and reveal a world where every touch tells
and where every separate thing or force of Nature is a deity. There is a dryad
in every tree and a nymph in every water ripple as it were. The Rigvedas thus
transports its readers to a charmed world where every component of the non
human world is a divinity.
And the Rigvedas perceive the lute of gods in
the thunder. The ogre Vritra stole away the cows and confined them in a pen.
The demon Vritra dammed the rivers and confined them. The thunder god Indra
slayed the demon and freed the rivers from the caves. He freed the
goddess Dawn from captivity at the beginning of time.
Is it very difficult to recognise Vritra
among us? Well, nowadays you donot get cowmilk directly from the udder of
the mother cow. Whatever milk we get in India is pouch packed and
pasteurised through processing plant. The person who enjoys milk and the person
viz. the cow who gives milk have been separated. The mother has been separated
from her children. All the important rivers in the world is dammed today. The
rivers are no longer in their elements. The natural flood cycles are suspended
with dire ecological consequences. Millions of men have been homeless. Millions
of kilometres of land surface have been inundated by the reservoirs all over
the world destroying wild life habitats and fertile lands. The courses of
the rivers have been changed by force and alas! Just as we are separated from
our mother cows so are the rivers like the Nile or the Colorado are debarred
from uniting with the sea. While an industry is earmarked to produce one
or two articles –a steel plant produces steel alone---the river functions on n
levels. It cools the atmosphere. It fertilizes the land. It cleanses us of our
dirt. It gives shelter to numerous fishes alligators tortoises sharks whales
mosses and water plants, to name a few. The washerman washes clothes at its
bank. The mother cleanses the crockeries and cutleries with the waters of a
river. It slakes the thirst of elephants buffaloes tigers deer rats and cats
and birds and so on. While the life expectancy of a factory
is only say thirty years , factories may come and factories may go, the
river goes on doing its countless duties for ever.
One of the finest philosopher poets of our
time KV Dominic observes
Multicultural instincts
Exist in all creatures
Inanimate beings know
How to flow with the system
There is a Vedic strain in Dominic. The
inanimate are also persons . And in the world of eye and ear the inanimate and
animate together make a multicultural symphony. Dominic points out:
The entire system
is a grand concert
composed by the Sole spirit
As matter and spirit
Animate and inanimate
Visible and invisible……
The Vritras of today in the disguise of
civilisation have not only blocked the natural flow of the rivers and consciousness;
they have robbed us of the gifts of God such as land and days and nights
So the dawns are imprisoned.Well where do the Vritras live? In the fortress.
What kind of fortress it is. We need not be carried by the wings of Pegasus to
experience the fortress of a demon. Here is an Albanian English fellow poet of
ours Marinaj Gjeke who describes the fortress of Vritra which is now
known as the city of New York.

The thunder god Indra destroyed ninetynine
such fortresses of Vritra. The future is in the past as it were in
Vedic imagination.
Once the demon of draught is killed the
rivers will flow the cows will graze and Nature will be in its elements. In
Jewish scripture Abel was the favourite of God because he was a shephered. Cain
on the other hand was a cultivator. In fact civilisation began with man;s
participation in agriculture. And civilisation is antithesis to Nature.
Agriculture prompts deforestation and causes change in the property of the
soil. It tells upon the properties of water. It is one of the conditions for
climate change. And hence God cursed Cain.
And the poet K V Dominic also does not
believe in private property. With him as it was with Proudhon property is
theft.
God is the sole owner
Empty handed we come
and empty handed we go
In another poem Dominic posits
Plants and animals never divide
the earth among themselves
What right has the mortal man
To divide and own this immortal planet
Cats frolicked in a neighbouring
house of the poet. The neighbour killed them. Dominic complains:
Is it offence to run along the compound?
Is it sin to play hide and seek with birds?
Is it crime to defecate in pits
and bury it nearby?
And like angry God he curses his neighbour.
The neighbour will be born a rat to be killed by cats in his next life. This is
comic. Despite that we feel how greatly the poet was grieved at the death of
the cat
Once possession of land is debunked by the
ecopoets pastoral becomes a trope of eco literature and eco criticism. It
reminds of Theocritus and Radha Krishna literature of India.
T V Reddy Reddy describes
Shepherds with sunburnt faces and feet
Empty bottle gourds of water to beat heat
Slowly return with flocks of sheep
With searching eyes sunken deep
Thanks to urbanisation they are deprived of the joys of
life. But ecocriticism wants to revive the vision of Arcadia. Fling the cities
and factories into bins
One of the finest modern Vietnamese poets Mai Van Phan
writes pastorals as it were reflected on dewdrops of three fyttes-. In the role
of a shepherd he observes
A buffalo call
Is busy sniffing young grass
Its mother departing farther and farther
Elsewhere Mai Van Phan observes:
A Glimpse of Spring
A buffalo calf has
passed by
A patch of young grass
has disappeared
A boy has spilled honey
Wonderful imagery. When the buffalo eats a
patch of grass, a boy – the shepherd boy that looks after Nature,
rains manna on the ground and there will be fresh grasses. Because death and
resurrection is a refrain in Nature. Civilisation unlike Nature revels in
industries that produces things that cannot be recycled.
However much we are urbanised the truths that
awake shall perish never. And the invitation of Amiens in
Shakespeare seems to ring inaudibly in the jungles of palaces and
supermarkets
Under the green wood tree
who likes to live with me
Come hither Come hither
Here shall he see no enemy
But winter and rough weather
Eco poetry and eco criticism say---Yes Amiens
! We are coming to you. The word eco derived from oikos means home. We must
return home which is Nature. And the human constructs will vanish presently. Dominic
exclaims:
There will be no India Pakistan or China
America Africa Europe or Australia
In other words we will be back to Nature. The
state of Nature as delineated by Hobbes where every man is against every man
and where life is nahsty brutish and dull is the state humanity is
undergoing now, thanks to utilitarianism urban values and greed. In Hobbesian
state of Nature there is no role of real Nature the trees the tigers the
mosquitoes the buffaloes the rivers the swallows… There the distorted minds of
men, distorted by civilisation are the protagonists
But our home Nature is full of abundance and
abandon.
Fragrance of the rose
Intoxication to the fly
Dancing round the plant
Yellow mellow papaya
Longing violent kisses
Feasting crows and mynahs
Refreshing downpour
A child in ecstasy
Drenched dancing
We want to escape from the prison house of
civilisation like the goat in Mai Van Phan. The goat says:
In a Goat’s Words
Open the pen
Drop your knife and cutting board
Let me go back to the mountains
And once we could return to Nature which is
our home the dogs and the cows and the deer and the trees and the plants will
also participate in our lives like kins. When Sakuntala of Kalidasa is
departing from the forest retreat she bids farewell to the trees and plants and
the animals in tears. The trees also weep shedding flowers. A deer bites her
apparel asking her not to go away.
The archetypal Nature as depicted by Kalidasa
and Valmiki communicating with man, as if man is Nature’s own. recurs in
Dominic. As Dominic opens his door the roses greet him Good Morning Sir. Dominic
smiles back, Dominic goes down the stairs and notice the petals waving at him -
Bon Voyage The lilies then wish him – Good Health. Thanking them Dominic drives
to the university! Ha Ha!
This is not all. Communication with Nature
might lead us divine colloquy.
