"Những hạt giống của đêm và ngày ("

"Bầu trời không mái che" ("A Ciel Ouvert" / "Firmament without Roof Cover")

Dear all, it’s my honor to have this opportunity to promote the poetry book of the two eminent and awarded poets with the international poetry award “Aco Karamanov” 2020, Mai Văn Phấn from Vietnam and Raed Anis Al-Jishi from Saudi Arabia. I would like to express my gratitude to the poet and the president of the Karamanov Poetry Meetings, Borche Panov, for his extraordinary selection of poems by the two authors, and also to share with you the responsibility that I had as a translator of this book from English into Macedonian language. Translation of literary texts is a great challenge - the translator has to keep the form of the text, since it is part of the code, and to convey the content in an authentic way, which given the cultural specifics that influence the language and the literary text is not an easy task. The translator of poetry has to be a poet himself or herself or to have something poetic inside him/her so that s/he could feel the nuances in the usage of the linguistic units that function as a literary sign themselves, as Iuri Lotman claims, and to convey them safely into another language with a minimal loss of the semantic values. And now, let me say a few words about the authors.

The Vietnamese poet Mai Văn Phấn was born in 1955 in Ninh Bình, Red River Delta in North Vietnam. Currently, he lives and writes his poems in Hải Phòng city. He has won a number of Vietnamese and international literary awards, including The Vietnam Writers' Association Award in 2010, The Cikada Literary Prize of Sweden in 2017, The Award of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2019 and The Literary award from Association of Literary Translators of Montenegro in 2020. He has published 16 poetry books and 1 book "Critiques - Essays" in Vietnam. 21 of his poetry books are published and released in foreign countries as well as on the Amazon's book distribution network. Mai Văn Phấn’s poems have been translated into 33 languages.

In December 2012, the English collection titled “Firmament without Roof Cover” became one of Amazon’s 100 best-selling poetry books. June 2014, the three collections in Vietnamese and English titled “Ra vườn chùa xem cắt cỏ” (“Grass Cutting in a Temple Garden”) and “Những hạt giống của đêm và ngày (“Seeds of Nights and Day”) as well as his Vietnamese-French collection titled “Bầu trời không mái che” (“A Ciel Ouvert”/ “Firmament without Roof Cover”) were among the top ten of Amazon’s 100 best-selling poetry collections from Asia.

Raed Anis Al-JISHI is a poet and translator from Qateef, Saudi Arabia. He has an honorary fellowship in writing from Iowa university-USA, he is also a member of advisory committee of the exquisite Teacher training plan of national Changua University of Education-Taiwan. Raed has translated 5 books, and  published one novel, nine volumes of poems in Arabic (the last one was translated into French) and one in English (“Bleeding Gull: Look, Feel, Fly”) - this book was translated into Serbian, Vietnamese and Italian, and has won the award for the best translated book in Italy on several different occasions. His poetry is translated into many world languages.

“New Year Bath and Baffled Gunpowder” by Văn Phấn and Al-Jishi is a book of poetry in which the contrast functions as a unity – in their poems, especially in Raed’s poems, but also in the whole book as an entity, because these two poets are dramatically different in terms of their choice of the poetic motifs, but also in their writing style.

The poetry of Mai Văn Phấn seems to be oriented towards landscapes and nature, but if we take a closer look into the poetic discourse we will notice that it is not an ordinary description of landscapes that the poetic subject is amazed, thrilled or occupied by. In fact, the poetic “I” equalizes itself with the nature to the extent that the emotional side of the poems becomes alive by the metaphorical transfer of the attributes, emotions and thought of the poetic Subject to the nature as a whole and as an entity, but also to its essential components.

The Opening Ground

Gushing

between the screams of ephemeral belts of land

the riverbed writhes in waning light

dusk holds day tight in its mouth

fire convulses

fiercely ascending the tree tops

scorching the buds

A flight of birds spreads across the sky

so thoughts can reign on earth

where the wind’s face meets a bowed hill top

a deep cavern exhales myths to morning dew

ponds and puddles find a heavenly direction

the river gives birth while flowing

An open embrace of waves

playing in childish ebullience

the water surface turns to ruins

You set up an already broken sun

Drifting...

An unknown silence is drifting by

the lamp wick shortens

as kerosene soot says its last words

I vaguely hear the boiling batch of herb saying its apology

Erupting...

A flower opens vast expanses of land.

That kind of transfer of the attributions is sometimes lucid and it is most evident in the poetic images in which the wind, the sun, the cloud, the flower and everything that is related to the mother nature has been revived by using personification and vice versa, because it sometimes happens for the poetic Subject to lose all of its anthropomorphic features and to survive by reviving that umbilical cord with which we are all connected to Earth – the umbilical cord that we have forgotten lately because of the industrialization, electrification, business world that lives in an office and the digitalization of life itself.

The poetry of Mai Văn Phấn is perceived with all of our senses and each poetry element is very carefully chosen: nothing is in excess. The most appropriate example of this claim are Phan’s short poems – miniatures in which the title of the poem is also a part of the body of the poem and essential for constructing the meaning (Spring Sun: Drops its breasts/ Dangling down/ To newly budding seeds, pg. 9, and Target: A leaf of spring/
Falls/ Right on summer, pg. 10
). The poetic images are visual and auditory, and tactile and olfactory as well. Yet, in spite of the vivid descriptions, the images are dynamic and they transmute in each other in a manner that the objective and subjective reality are interwoven living in symbiosis. The nature for Mai Văn Phấn serves as a motif and language at the same time, because he uses lexis that come out of that semantic field in order to revive new worlds, and with the very same words he paints the psychological life of the poetic Subject. Everything that is around the perceiver and the actor, i.e. the environment is actively involved in the process of creation of that image. Therefore, we can say that in the poetry of Mai Văn Phấn the poetic “I” and everything that surrounds him with a special accent put to nature and all of its manifestations and transformations co-act and produce something that is unrepeatable. Phan articulates the voice of the modern human that is longing for its own essence and being; because he knows that he was born by his mother Earth.

Nevertheless, his poetry opus also consists of narrative poems, and poems with surrealistic elements that function as “open” texts which invite the reader to be actively involved in the process of construction of meaning by interpreting symbols, synecdoches, metaphors and metonimies. The poem titled “On Pole Tops” is one such example:

On Pole Tops

My tongue is tied

to a pole top

so each time I speak

the tongue has to contract

pulling this obese body up

I thrash like a piece of cloth tossing in strong winds.

As I think about my tongue’s pain

a butterfly forms on a stone ledge

Its trembling rosy wings shake the stone embankment

Then a billboard advertising a carbonated power drink

Boasts high quality ingredients for performance

From another fanciful place

A girl twists her back inside a calendar cover

She smiles and holds her hand up for a long time.

I exist because of the butterfly, billboard and unknown girl

They speak for me

Now the root of my tongue is an abyss.

But why do they exist on their own?

Maybe their tongues are hung from other pole tops.

Raed Anis Al-Jishi is a postmodern poet. His poetry is full of blood and excitement, because of the well chosen and astounding motifs and because of the way the language functions in his poems in order to convey meaning. He uses brave and shocking metaphors in which two sememes that are unlikely to stand next to each other are brought together. The poetry of Al-Jishi is figurative and metaphorical and the poetic images are created instantly as concretized poetic motifs and they transform into complex images that are perceived as visualization of thought in which the concrete and the abstract ideas are paired and are equal in the process of conveying the main idea. Some words can’t grow without a body/ unless slain in the temple of description. (The Final Act, pg.).

Al-Jishi engages in a conversation with the reader by addressing him in an informal way. It is a communication with a friend or with someone who is very close to the poet’s mind and feelings. As a comparison, if we previously said that Phan has several poems that act as “open” texts, in the case of Raed Al-Jishi that becomes a rule. He creates codes, which is common for post-modern poets, with which he makes the reader equal to the poet. The meaning is a fluid that flaws in both directions and as a result of that co-acts with the readers who also create multiple texts influenced by their personality features and traits, and by the society and the culture itself, because people are social and cultural constructs as much as they are biological beings.

The motifs come out of the contemporary life of the human being who is alienated from the social reality as much as he is actively involved in it, which is the absurdity of today. Nevertheless, human beings are connected to the past and to the tradition as well. We could even say that Raed’s poetry is socially engaged as much as it is personal and deeply reflexive, because by the aestheticization of the ugly, he conveys a message that the exploitation of the workers’ sweat and the hedonistic democracy are used in the process of capturing the will of the individual for the purpose of controlling to the extent that “the kings of passion” are crowned with woes in society in which the most eminent “democrats“ have absolute power with which they suffocate their own citizens. Why do you need a supreme authority/ to monitor how many times you cleaned your urethra and anus with water,/ and trying to rationalize the wetness in your lips, / it thinks about you as an individual element of a collective behavior/ but it wastes grand springs from your eyes / and buries a sea of pulsing avicennias (Supreme Authority, pg. 61). Only freedom deserves your servitude (The Secret Ejaculation of a Chestnut, pg. 68). This contradiction found in a verse only, strengthens even more the idea that freedom is an absolute and that human relations should be built on the basis of free will. Don’t fall downhill/ on the lungs of chaos.// Rather, give the resonance/ its freedom to be free/ from the waste and the deep,/ fatal wakefulness,// for this cave/ doesn't care about the eternity of the mountain,/ nor its skill in coexistence with/ a pole fascinated by stripping (Forgetting, pg.)

In the poetry of Al-Jishi the most evident motif is death. Sometimes, death has got anthropomorphic features as it is the case with the poem “Baffled Gunpowder” where death being embarrassed by the human’s thirst of destruction and murder, prostrates and prays like the heavens is praying for the humans. Therefore, the humans and its Thanatos are worse than death that is not an end, but the beginning. Its face depends on the way we have lived our lives and on what we have left behind us. I never sip drowsiness all at once,/ didn’t think of seeking it/ from the shepherds' Sheikhs.// And I didn't learn the rules of love/ before falling asleep./ I used to feel bored by Rumi’s speeches,/ and I like to think of death as a mistress… A mistress wont swing like a gallows/ nor wrap around like a snake/ when she pursues you/ through punctuation marks… You are suffocated like another beat/ in a theatrical rhythm./ There is no genetic mutation rising/ in the twilight of the trail.// Only the mistress/ is spinning surreptitiously/ the carpet for marching (The Body, pg. 76). Eros and Thanatos in the poetry of Raed are in unity and they do not exclude each other. Love is death and death does not imply end: I bring you glad tidings/ of death’s sweetness,/ and bury my laughter as a soulful crow (Tidings, pg. 52). I lionize my pain/ for no reason, but because/ it belongs to me (Lionizing, pg. 65) or I could love,/ I could love and die her way (On Love and Death), pg. 78). In order to prove the previously made claims that the contrasts are united and that they are constantly co-acting we will present these verses: I don't need the feminine pronoun/ to redefine Virility.// The sun is immanent/ and solid enough/ to evade the temptation of shadow (Feminization, pg. 53).

Finally, let me conclude that “New Year Bath. Baffled Gunpowder” by Mai Văn Phấn and Raed Anis Al-Jishi is a book of poetry that unites contrasts on many levels: the vast fields of Vietnam and sheikhs and shepherds in Saudi Arabia, the life that is being kept in the grapefruit flowers, the fresh pineapple and the sweet orange and in all the seasons of the year that we put оn the dining table, and the life that keeps returning as a juice to the soil and the lifeless soil at which the human face of death is looking; death that sometimes is more human than the human itself and death like a curtain in a vintage theatre. This is a book about the wind that wipes sweat off freshly bathed dreams, about sleep drenched with poisonous wine and the fertile dream, about the dreams that hammer back the nails out of the hands pierced and fixed on the cross, about the gentle and fragile love with which the sun, the fields, the hill, the wind, the flower, the little lakes and swamps, the seeds, the buds look at us, and about the passionate love that is constantly on the edge between life and death just like the dance of the bullets which could be offered as a substitute of love, about the languages with which we acknowledge the world, about the crucifying of the language in the theatre of time, but also about the thought that is hung on the clothesline and about the sky that rests on the tree branches.

that doesn't satisfy your taste.

You need a girl that takes a relish in plucking dolls' heads

and breaking toys' legs.

When you fight her for the flowing of her fabricated device,

this girl doesn’t see you as a big child

deserving to be spoiled,

as someone lost sensing the simplicity of a color.

This girl sees you as

a challenging phase in this RPG game.

This girl can tame you when you think recklessly.

This girl doesn't carry a whip and sickle,

but can wear your skin violently

after she enjoys flaying it.

Yet she plays with you

the game of tea and dolls

to test your patience

and tells you about her need to go shopping

by mentioning all the details

and possible causes

in that certain time

and that certain day

to measure your endurance.

Be ready to indulge in your surrender

when she will have no mercy on you.

But --

When your girl forgets to taste your body,

leave...  and think only about the viper.

Only the viper understands the essence of females.

The others are an escape that shuts the eyes of truth

with an eyelid's cacophony.

Escape the writing of an irreconcilable history.

...
